## Short answer

For most homes, the best dual WAN router is one that can fail over to the backup you already have: ASUS routers with Dual WAN, such as the RT-BE58U, list phone tethering and LTE dongles as backup options, and GL.iNet's Flint 3 lists tethering and failover with Wi-Fi 7 on three bands. If you want a second wired ISP or more than two WANs, a UniFi gateway fits; eero owners should use eero Signal or Hotspot Backup.

## Key takeaways

- Dual WAN means two internet connections on one router. Failover keeps one connection on standby until the main one drops; load balancing uses both at once.
- ASUS's RT-BE58U spec sheet lists Dual WAN, a 3G/4G LTE dongle and 4G/5G mobile tethering. ASUS says its Dual WAN supports IPv4 only and that load balancing can break DDNS and port forwarding.
- GL.iNet's Flint 3 (GL-BE9300) lists dual Ethernet WAN, USB tethering and cellular backup with failover and load balancing; it was $209.99 on GL.iNet's US store on November 2, 2026.
- Ubiquiti says UniFi gateways support up to eight WANs, limited by physical ports. The Cloud Gateway Ultra listed at $129 ($142 with surcharge) but showed as sold out on Ubiquiti's US store on November 2, 2026; neither listing we checked shows built-in Wi-Fi.
- Failover protects you from an ISP outage, not a power outage. Your router, modem and backup device all need power.

---

The best dual WAN router for most homes is one that fails over to a backup you already have. If your backup is a phone or a USB cellular modem, an ASUS router such as the RT-BE58U, or GL.iNet's Flint 3 (GL-BE9300), lists both Dual WAN and USB tethering. If you pay for a second wired ISP, or want more than two connections, a UniFi gateway supports multiple WANs (up to eight on models with enough ports). If you already run eero, skip dual WAN hardware and use eero Signal or Hotspot Backup.

This is a research-based guide built from manufacturer support pages, spec sheets and store listings. We have not tested these routers, and we don't name a single winner, because the right pick depends on what your backup connection is.

## What dual WAN does, and what it doesn't

A WAN port is where internet comes into your router. Dual WAN lets a router use two of them. ASUS describes it as selecting "two ISP connections to your router, a primary WAN and a secondary WAN," and there are two ways to use them:

- **Failover:** "When your current WAN connection fails, your router will switch to the backup network" (ASUS). This is what most homes want. A metered cellular backup sits idle until it's needed.
- **Load balancing:** "distribute the load between the Primary WAN and Secondary WAN" (ASUS). This makes sense when both connections are unmetered, such as cable plus fiber.

Two limits apply to every option below. First, failover covers an ISP outage, not a power cut: the router, modem and backup device all need power, so pair any of these with a small UPS if outages in your area are electrical. Second, the backup is only as good as its signal and data plan. A phone hotspot on a capped plan can usually keep email and a video call running, but is unlikely to cover a family's streaming.

## Quick picks by need

| Your situation | What to look at | Backup types (per maker) | Main catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Want a regular Wi-Fi router with phone or LTE backup | ASUS RT-BE58U, or another ASUS model with Dual WAN | Second WAN on a LAN port, LTE dongle, 4G/5G mobile tethering | Dual WAN is IPv4 only; load balancing can break port forwarding and DDNS |
| Want a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router with more WAN options | GL.iNet Flint 3 (GL-BE9300) | Dual Ethernet WAN, Wi-Fi repeater, USB tethering, cellular backup | No built-in cellular radio listed |
| Already own a TP-Link Wi-Fi router | Check for Multi-WAN Backup in firmware | Ethernet, USB modem, USB tethering | TP-Link's guide doesn't list supported models; older firmware may lack it |
| Two or more wired ISPs, or a home office | UniFi gateway, such as the Cloud Gateway Ultra | Up to eight WANs (port-limited); UniFi LTE backup on a LAN port | Cloud Gateway Ultra listings show no built-in Wi-Fi; Ubiquiti pairs it with UniFi access points |
| Already on eero mesh | eero Signal, or Hotspot Backup | Cellular (eero Signal) or a phone/Wi-Fi hotspot | eero Signal needs an annual eero Plus data plan; Hotspot Backup is an eero Plus feature |

## ASUS: the easiest route for most homes

ASUS publishes a detailed Dual WAN setup guide for its routers. On the RT-BE58U, a dual-band Wi-Fi 7 router, ASUS's spec sheet lists "Dual WAN," a "3G / 4G LTE dongle" and "4G / 5G Auto Mobile Tethering" as internet connection types. Its ports are one 2.5 Gbps WAN/LAN, one 1 Gbps WAN/LAN, three 1 Gbps LAN and a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port (from ASUS's Canadian spec page; we couldn't find the US page in search).

Why it suits most people: the secondary WAN can be a USB device or an Ethernet LAN port, which covers both "plug my phone in" and "add a second modem." ASUS says the options are "WAN, USB, Ethernet LAN," and that you can't use the same type for both.

Know these limits before you buy, all from ASUS's Dual WAN FAQ (last updated August 13, 2025):

- **IPv4 only:** "Currently, the dual WAN feature of ASUS wireless routers only supports IPv4." If you rely on IPv6, see our [IPv6 guide](https://wifiweekly.com/guides/should-you-enable-ipv6/).
- **Load balancing side effects:** with load balancing on, "Virtual Server / Port Forwarding may not be used normally," and DDNS may not either. If you host a game server or camera access, use failover instead. Our [port forwarding guide](https://wifiweekly.com/guides/how-to-set-up-port-forwarding/) explains why it matters.
- **No WAN Aggregation at the same time:** "dual WAN and WAN Aggregation cannot be enabled at the same time."

The RT-BE58U is a dual-band (BE3600) router without a 6 GHz band. If that matters to you, read [Dual-Band Wi-Fi 7: What You Lose Without 6 GHz](https://wifiweekly.com/guides/dual-band-wifi-7/). We couldn't confirm a current US price at a retailer today, so we've left it out.

## GL.iNet Flint 3: tri-band Wi-Fi 7 with the most WAN options

GL.iNet's Flint 3 (model GL-BE9300) is a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router with five 2.5 Gbps Ethernet ports (one WAN, four LAN) and a USB 3.0 port, per GL.iNet's datasheet. The datasheet lists Ethernet, repeater, tethering and cellular as internet connection methods, with "Failover, Load Balance" supported.

GL.iNet's US store describes support for "dual Ethernet WAN, Wi-Fi repeater, USB tethering, and cellular backup," with "built-in failover and load balancing," and says LAN1 can be switched to WAN for a second wired connection. GL.iNet doesn't list a built-in cellular radio ("Cellular: N/A"), so cellular backup would need a USB modem or a tethered phone.

Price: $209.99 on GL.iNet's US store, checked November 2, 2026. The store page didn't show stock status.

Who it suits: people who want 6 GHz Wi-Fi and the option of using an existing Wi-Fi network (repeater mode), a phone or a second modem as backup.

## TP-Link: check what you already own

If you already have a TP-Link Wi-Fi router, look for Multi-WAN Backup before buying anything. TP-Link's support article (last updated August 19, 2026) says the feature supports Ethernet, a "3G/4G/5G USB dongle" and "USB Tethering," in either Failover Mode ("the default and best for reliability") or Load Balance. You'll find it under Advanced > Network > Internet > Multi-WAN.

The catch: TP-Link's guide doesn't list which models have it. It says "Older firmware may not support the Multi-WAN feature," and the feature isn't available in Access Point mode. Update your firmware first, then check the menu.

## UniFi: for two wired ISPs or a home office

UniFi Cloud Gateways such as the Cloud Gateway Ultra are wired routers that you pair with UniFi access points for Wi-Fi. Ubiquiti's help center says you "can connect up to eight WAN interfaces," limited by the number of physical ports, with one port kept for LAN. Failover "is designed to prioritize one active WAN connection, while others remain on standby," and load balancing spreads new connections by a weighted split you choose.

For cellular backup, Ubiquiti says "UniFi LTE devices can serve as backup WANs by connecting to a LAN port," and they don't count toward the WAN limit.

The entry point is the Cloud Gateway Ultra. Ubiquiti's US store listed it at $129.00 ($142.00 including a surcharge) on November 2, 2026, but showed it as sold out. A retailer listing describes "Redundant WAN with failover and load balancing" and refers to UniFi access points for Wi-Fi; neither listing shows built-in Wi-Fi. Budget for at least one access point on top of the gateway.

Who it suits: a home office with cable plus fiber, or anyone who wants more than two WAN connections. It's more setup than most households need.

## eero: use eero's own backup instead

If you run eero, its two backup options do the same job for most homes:

- **eero Signal** "provides dedicated cellular backup connectivity to compatible eero networks." It needs a USB-C-powered eero and a data plan through annual eero Plus, which includes "up to 10 GB of backup data per year." Our [eero Signal 4G vs. 5G guide](https://wifiweekly.com/guides/eero-signal-4g-vs-5g/) covers the models and plans.
- **Hotspot Backup** can "set up a nearby mobile hotspot or wifi network as a backup," connecting wirelessly, so nothing is plugged in. eero calls it an eero Plus feature.

## How to choose

1. **Start with your backup connection.** A phone or USB modem points to ASUS, GL.iNet or a TP-Link router you already own. A second wired ISP points to ASUS, GL.iNet or TP-Link, or to UniFi if you want more than two.
2. **Pick failover unless both lines are unmetered.** Load balancing on a capped cellular plan burns data while your main line is fine, and on ASUS it can break port forwarding.
3. **Check your ISP equipment.** If your ISP's gateway is also a router, put it in bridge mode or you'll get double NAT on the primary line. See our [bridge mode guide](https://wifiweekly.com/guides/bridge-mode-double-nat-own-router/). If you have 5G home internet as your main line, read our [5G home internet router guide](https://wifiweekly.com/guides/best-router-for-5g-home-internet/) first.
4. **Plan for power.** A UPS for the modem, router and backup device keeps failover useful during storms.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between failover and load balancing?

Failover uses one connection and switches to the backup only when the main link fails. Load balancing splits traffic across both connections at once. For a home with a cellular or phone backup, failover is usually the right choice, because it spends little or no metered mobile data while your main line works.

### Can I use my phone as a backup internet connection for my router?

Yes, on routers that support USB tethering. ASUS lists 4G/5G mobile tethering on the RT-BE58U, TP-Link's Multi-WAN Backup supports USB tethering, and GL.iNet lists tethering on the Flint 3. eero's Hotspot Backup connects to a phone hotspot wirelessly instead.

### Does load balancing make my internet faster?

It can raise total capacity when many devices are busy, but Ubiquiti describes load balancing as spreading new outbound connections across WANs, so any one connection still runs over a single line. ASUS also warns that load balancing may stop port forwarding and DDNS from working normally, so it isn't a free upgrade.

### Does a dual WAN router work during a power outage?

Only if the router, your modem or ONT, and the backup device all have power. A small UPS is the usual fix. Cellular backup on its own does not help if the router is off.
