Best Modem Router Combo in 2026: Picks by Plan
Best modem router combo for cable internet: ARRIS SURFboard G36 for plans up to 1 Gbps, NETGEAR CAX30 as an alternative, and SURFboard G54 for Wi-Fi 7.

On this page
The best modem router combo for most cable internet plans up to about 1 Gbps is the ARRIS SURFboard G36: DOCSIS 3.1, AX3000 Wi-Fi 6, and a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port alongside four gigabit ports. The NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX30 is the alternative if you’d rather buy NETGEAR (four gigabit ports, but no 2.5 Gbps port); it was $379.99 at netgear.com on November 6, 2026. If you want Wi-Fi 7 and a 10 Gbps port, the ARRIS SURFboard G54 is the step up. Before buying any of them, check two things: that your provider supports the exact model on your plan, and that you don’t need cable phone service, which none of the three supports.
This is a research-based guide. We haven’t tested these devices; the specs come from ARRIS and NETGEAR, and prices and stock were checked at retailer and maker websites on November 6, 2026. Wi-Fi ratings such as AX3000 or BE18000 are combined maximum link rates across bands, not speeds you’ll see on one device.
Quick picks by need
| Your situation | Pick | Wi-Fi | Ethernet ports | Maker’s plan guidance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cable plan up to about 1 Gbps, want one simple box | ARRIS SURFboard G36 | Wi-Fi 6, AX3000 | 1 × 2.5 Gbps, 4 × 1 Gbps | “Best for cable internet speed plans up to 1.2 Gbps” |
| Same, prefer NETGEAR | NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX30 | Wi-Fi 6, AX2700 (dual-band) | 4 × 1 Gbps | Xfinity certified up to 800 Mbps; Spectrum and Cox 1 Gbps |
| Want Wi-Fi 7, 6 GHz and a multi-gig port | ARRIS SURFboard G54 | Wi-Fi 7, BE18000 (2.4, 5 and 6 GHz) | 1 × 10 Gbps, 4 × 1 Gbps | ARRIS gives two different figures (see below) |
All three are DOCSIS 3.1 cable modems with a router built in. They work on cable internet only, not fiber, DSL or 5G home internet.
Before you buy: three checks
1. Do you pay an equipment fee now? Buying your own combo saves money only if you’re renting equipment. Xfinity’s support page, last updated September 2, 2026, says: “The latest Xfinity Internet plans include the Xfinity Gateway at no extra cost.” If that’s your plan, a combo is about control and features, not savings. Our guide to buying your own router vs. using your provider’s walks through that trade-off.
2. Does your provider support the exact model? ARRIS says its SURFboard models are “tested and qualified by Cox, Comcast Xfinity, and Charter Spectrum,” but also that “compatibility may vary by model and provider.” NETGEAR lists Xfinity, Spectrum and Cox for the CAX30. For Xfinity, the provider’s own advice is to “sign in to My Device Info to see devices that work with your service.” Our best modem for Xfinity guide covers Xfinity’s rules in more detail.
3. Do you have cable phone service? ARRIS lists no telephone port on the G36 and “NO” for digital voice on the G54, and NETGEAR says the CAX30 isn’t compatible with “cable bundled voice services.” If you have phone service from your cable company, these combos can’t replace the equipment that runs it.
ARRIS SURFboard G36: best for most plans up to 1 Gbps
The G36 is ARRIS’s DOCSIS 3.1 modem with AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 built in.
What ARRIS lists:
- “Best for cable internet speed plans up to 1.2 Gbps,” per ARRIS’s store page. A comparison table on ARRIS’s G54 page lists the G36 at “Up to 2.5 Gbps,” so ARRIS isn’t consistent; we use the lower figure.
- Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), “up to 3000 Mbps” combined.
- “One 2.5 Gbps and Four 1Gbps Ethernet Ports.”
- “Compatible with Cox, Spectrum, Xfinity and other major U.S. Cable Internet Providers.”
- No telephone port.
Why it’s the main pick: the 2.5 Gbps port is the detail that sets it apart from the CAX30. On a plan near 1 Gbps, a single gigabit Ethernet link to a desktop or a switch tops out right around your plan speed; a 2.5 Gbps port gives a wired PC or a multi-gig switch some headroom. Our explainer on multi-gig ports covers when that matters.
What to know: we couldn’t confirm a current US price or stock status; ARRIS’s store page for the G36 didn’t show either. ARRIS lists the G36 as Wi-Fi 6, not Wi-Fi 6E, so it’s not the pick if you want Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 devices to use the 6 GHz band.
NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX30: the NETGEAR alternative
The CAX30 is NETGEAR’s “Two-in-One Cable Modem + WiFi 6 Router.” It was $379.99 at netgear.com on November 6, 2026, listed as the current price; the page didn’t state stock status.
What NETGEAR lists:
- DOCSIS 3.1 modem, “compatible with 32x8 DOCSIS 3.0.”
- Dual-band AX2700 Wi-Fi 6: up to 0.9 Gbps on 2.4 GHz and 1.8 Gbps on 5 GHz.
- Four gigabit Ethernet ports, with port aggregation, and one USB 3.0 port.
- Works with Xfinity, Spectrum and Cox. NETGEAR lists Xfinity certification up to 800 Mbps, and 1 Gbps for Spectrum and Cox.
- Not compatible with “Cable bundled voice services or fiber Internet services.”
Who it’s for: someone on a Spectrum or Cox plan up to 1 Gbps, or an Xfinity plan up to 800 Mbps, who prefers NETGEAR’s app and ecosystem. NETGEAR’s page also says the CAX30 can do “up to 10 Gbps download,” but that’s a DOCSIS 3.1 capability figure; the provider-certified tiers above are what to plan around, and the fastest Ethernet port is 1 Gbps.
What to know: on Xfinity, NETGEAR’s certified figure is 800 Mbps. If your Xfinity plan is faster than that, look at the G36 or G54 and confirm the model in My Device Info.
ARRIS SURFboard G54: the Wi-Fi 7 option
The G54 is ARRIS’s “DOCSIS 3.1 Gigabit Modem & Wi-Fi 7 Router.” Staples listed it at $509.99 on November 6, 2026, but showed it as out of stock, so treat that as a reference price rather than one you can buy at today.
What ARRIS lists (product page and data sheet):
- BE18000 Wi-Fi 7 across 2.4 GHz, two 5 GHz bands and 6 GHz. The data sheet rates 6 GHz at “up to 11.5Gbps,” each 5 GHz band at up to 2.9 Gbps, and 2.4 GHz (Wi-Fi 6) at up to 600 Mbps.
- 320 MHz channels and Multi-Link Operation (MLO).
- “One 10 Gigabit Ethernet Port plus Four 1 Gigabit Ethernet Ports.”
- Compatible with Cox, Spectrum and Xfinity; no digital voice.
- 1-year limited warranty.
Who it’s for: a household with Wi-Fi 7 phones or laptops that can use 6 GHz, on a cable plan faster than 1 Gbps, with a multi-gig wired device or switch to plug into the 10 Gbps port.
What to know: ARRIS’s product page gives two different plan figures for the G54: its spec table says “Up to 10 Gbps,” while its features section says it’s “best for cable internet speed plans up to 2.5 Gbps.” Plan around the lower figure and your provider’s own support list. The 6 GHz band, where the G54’s headline speed lives, needs Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 devices; if you’re not sure yours qualify, see does my device support 6 GHz Wi-Fi?
What about mesh?
A combo puts the modem and the main router in one box. In a large or multi-story home, one router may not cover everything, and adding mesh to a combo usually means turning the combo’s Wi-Fi off or running it alongside a mesh network.
NETGEAR does make a combo with mesh built in, the Orbi CBK752 (a cable modem router plus one satellite, rated AX4200, with a dedicated band between router and satellite). NETGEAR listed it as out of stock (taking backorders) at netgear.com on November 6, 2026. If you know you need mesh, a standalone cable modem plus a mesh system is easier to buy and to upgrade later; our router vs. mesh guide helps you decide.

Bottom line
If you’re on cable internet up to about 1 Gbps, don’t have cable phone service and are paying to rent equipment, the ARRIS SURFboard G36 is the combo to check first, with the NETGEAR CAX30 as the alternative. The SURFboard G54 makes sense when you have Wi-Fi 7 devices and a plan faster than a gigabit. Whichever you pick, confirm the model with your provider before you buy, and if you might switch to fiber in the next few years, buy a separate modem and router instead.
Frequently asked questions
Is a modem router combo better than a separate modem and router?
It's simpler, not better. A combo is one box, one power outlet and usually one app. Separate devices let you upgrade the Wi-Fi without replacing the modem, or switch to a mesh system later. If you might move to fiber or 5G home internet, a separate router is the safer buy, because a cable combo's router can't be moved to a fiber line.
Will a modem router combo work with Xfinity, Spectrum or Cox?
The makers list all three for these models, but support depends on the exact model and your plan. ARRIS says "compatibility may vary by model and provider." For Xfinity, sign in to My Device Info to see devices that work with your service.
Do these combos work with fiber internet?
No. They're cable (DOCSIS) modems with built-in routers. NETGEAR says the CAX30 is not compatible with fiber internet services. For fiber, you need a router only.
Will buying my own combo save me money?
Only if you're paying a monthly equipment fee now. Xfinity's support page says its latest plans include the Xfinity Gateway at no extra cost, so check your bill before you buy.
Can I add mesh Wi-Fi to a modem router combo?
Yes, but you'll usually want to turn off the combo's Wi-Fi, or use bridge mode if the model supports it, so you don't run two networks. If you know you want mesh, a separate modem plus a mesh system is often cleaner. NETGEAR's Orbi CBK752 combines a cable modem and mesh, but NETGEAR listed it as out of stock on November 6, 2026.
