## Short answer

For T-Mobile 5G Home Internet, the best add-on is usually a mesh system run in access point or bridge mode, because T-Mobile says its gateways can't do bridge mode. On Verizon, a gateway with IP Passthrough can hand its connection to your own router, so a mesh system in normal router mode works. Most typical 5G home speeds are well under a gigabit, so a Wi-Fi 6 system with gigabit ports covers most homes.

## Key takeaways

- T-Mobile says its gateways "do not have the ability to enable and disable bridge mode" or port forwarding. Your own router works over Ethernet, but the gateway keeps routing.
- So on T-Mobile, run a mesh system in access point (Deco) or bridge (eero) mode and turn off the gateway's Wi-Fi in the T-Life app. You lose Deco's Antivirus and Parental Controls, or eero Plus features such as Advanced security and Content Filters.
- Verizon's IP Passthrough article for its Verizon Internet Gateway says the network-assigned address is handed to the device on the LAN2 port, and the gateway's Wi-Fi turns off.
- T-Mobile's typical download range tops out at 498 Mbps; Verizon's tops out at 1,000 Mbps only on its high-band 1 Gig plan. Gigabit ports are enough for most 5G homes.
- Before buying, check what the carrier's own mesh extender offers: T-Mobile's V2 extender is Wi-Fi 7, and T-Mobile's setup guide pairs it with its Gen4 and Gen5 gateways.

---

The best router for 5G home internet is usually a mesh Wi-Fi system set up to work alongside your carrier's gateway, not a replacement for it. On **T-Mobile**, the gateway can't be put in bridge mode, so the cleanest setup is a mesh system in access point or bridge mode with the gateway's Wi-Fi turned off. On **Verizon**, gateways that offer IP Passthrough can hand the connection to your own router, so a mesh system can run as a full router. Either way, most typical 5G home speeds are well under a gigabit, so a Wi-Fi 6 mesh system with gigabit ports covers most homes; pay more only for range, newer devices or features.

## Quick picks by setup

| Your setup | What to buy | Mode to use |
|---|---|---|
| T-Mobile, want the least setup | T-Mobile's mesh Wi-Fi extender (V2), if your gateway is a Gen4 or Gen5 | Carrier mesh |
| T-Mobile, larger home or weak coverage, Wi-Fi 6 is enough | TP-Link Deco X55 (Wi-Fi 6) | Access Point mode, gateway Wi-Fi off |
| T-Mobile or Verizon, want Wi-Fi 7 and 2.5 GbE ports | eero 7 | Bridge mode on T-Mobile; router mode behind Verizon IP Passthrough |
| Verizon with IP Passthrough, want parental controls on your own router | Deco X55 or eero 7 | Router mode on LAN2 |

These are research-based picks from carrier and maker documentation; we haven't tested them on a 5G connection.

## What T-Mobile's gateway allows

T-Mobile's support page is direct about the limits. "Third-party routers can be connected to a T-Mobile gateway using the ethernet port," it says, and the gateway and your router will both broadcast Wi-Fi. But "T-Mobile gateways do not have the ability to enable and disable bridge mode," and they "do not have the ability to enable and disable NAT/port forwarding."

As we read it, that means a router you add in normal router mode sits behind the gateway's own routing: two layers of NAT, two Wi-Fi networks and two sets of settings. T-Mobile notes that "the Wi-Fi network broadcast can be disabled in the T-Life app." So turn the gateway's Wi-Fi off, plug a mesh system into the gateway's Ethernet port, and put the mesh system in access point or bridge mode so the gateway alone hands out addresses. eero's bridge mode article recommends the same pattern when your provider's equipment can't be bridged: turn off Wi-Fi on the equipment provided by your ISP and bridge the eeros.

On compatibility, T-Mobile says "Wi-Fi Extenders and Mesh Products that support Wi-Fi 6 are fully compatible with our 5G gateways," and that network switches on the gateway's Ethernet port are compatible too. Its gateway support page lists the 5G Gateway Gen5, 5G Gateway Gen4, Sagemcom FAST 5688W and Arcadyan KVD21.

## What Verizon's gateway allows

Verizon's 5G Home Internet support page lists several Verizon Internet Gateway models, including the ARC-XCI55AX, ASK-NCM1100, ASK-NCQ1338 and WNC-CR200A, plus a 5G Home Router (2nd gen) and other equipment. Its knowledge-base article "Verizon Internet Gateway - Configure IP Passthrough / Bridge Mode" describes a setting that hands the "IP address assigned by the network" to the device on the gateway's **LAN2** port. When it's on, Verizon says the gateway's Wi-Fi radios turn off automatically and internet access "is no longer available through Wi-Fi or the LAN1 Ethernet port."

The article doesn't name the models it covers, so look for **IP Passthrough** in the gateway's admin settings before you buy around it. If your gateway has it, your own router can run in normal router mode on LAN2, which keeps its own parental controls and security features and lets you manage port forwarding on it. Whether inbound connections actually reach you still depends on the address Verizon assigns; Verizon's article doesn't say whether it's public. If your gateway lacks IP Passthrough, use the same access point approach as on T-Mobile. Verizon's 5G Home Router support page also lists a port forwarding article for that router.

## How fast does your router need to be?

Not very, by Wi-Fi standards. T-Mobile publishes typical download ranges (roughly the 25th to 75th percentile of network tests) of 170 to 498 Mbps on its 5G Amplified and All-In plans and 133 to 415 Mbps on 5G Rely, with uploads of 12 to 55 Mbps. Verizon's broadband disclosure lists typical downloads of 85 to 250 Mbps on its mid-band 5G Home Ultimate plan, with only the high-band (mmWave) 1 Gig plan reaching 300 to 1,000 Mbps.

Gigabit Ethernet ports and Wi-Fi 6 handle those speeds, except at the top of Verizon's 1 Gig plan, where 2.5 GbE ports help. Wi-Fi 7 and 2.5 GbE ports are worth paying for if you also move big files between devices at home, have newer phones and laptops, or expect to switch to a faster wired plan later; they won't make the 5G link itself faster. Our [Wi-Fi 6E vs. Wi-Fi 7 guide](https://wifiweekly.com/guides/wifi-6e-vs-wifi-7/) covers when the newer standard pays off.

## The picks in detail

### T-Mobile's own mesh extender (V2)

If your gateway is a 5G Gateway Gen4 or Gen5, check T-Mobile's mesh Wi-Fi extender first. T-Mobile's spec list shows Wi-Fi 7 (11be/ax) on 2.4 and 5 GHz and two 2.5G Ethernet LAN ports, and it's set up after the gateway. T-Mobile's page doesn't say whether it's included with a plan or sold separately, so ask T-Mobile about cost.

### TP-Link Deco X55: Wi-Fi 6 mesh for access point mode

The **Deco X55** is a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 (AX3000) system with three gigabit Ethernet ports per unit. TP-Link lists a 2,402 Mbps (802.11ax, HE160) maximum link rate for its 5 GHz band (a physical rate, not real throughput) and claims up to 6,500 sq ft for a 3-pack or 4,500 sq ft for a 2-pack. It meets T-Mobile's Wi-Fi 6 compatibility line, and TP-Link lists Access Point Mode among its working modes.

In access point mode, TP-Link says the Deco "will not assign IP addresses to devices — your root router handles that," and that Antivirus, Parental Controls, Port Forwarding, Address Reservation and TP-Link DDNS are unavailable. On T-Mobile, that's the trade-off: simpler networking, but those features are unavailable unless the gateway offers them, and T-Mobile's can't port forward.

### eero 7: Wi-Fi 7 with 2.5 GbE ports

**eero 7** supports Wi-Fi 7, lists wireless speeds up to 1.8 Gbps and has two 2.5 GbE ports per unit, with eero claiming 2,000 sq ft of coverage per unit. On eero.com on October 26, 2026, it was $169.99 for one, $284.99 for a 2-pack and $399.99 for a 3-pack. Our [eero 7 vs. eero Pro 7 vs. eero Max 7 comparison](https://wifiweekly.com/guides/eero-7-vs-eero-pro-7-vs-eero-max-7/) covers the step-up models.

To use it on T-Mobile, switch it to bridge mode in the eero app (Settings > Advanced networking > DHCP & NAT > Bridge). eero says bridge mode turns off the eeros' network services while they keep providing Wi-Fi, that one eero must stay wired by Ethernet, and that eero Plus features including Advanced security, Ad Blocking and Content Filters don't work properly while bridged. Behind a Verizon gateway in IP Passthrough, you can leave it in normal router mode and keep those features.

## Before you buy

- **Find your gateway model** on its label or in the carrier's app, and check its support page for Ethernet ports and any passthrough setting.
- **Place the gateway for signal first.** On 5G home internet the gateway's spot is chosen for cellular reception, which is often a window, not the middle of the house. A mesh system lets you put Wi-Fi where you need it without moving the gateway.
- **Decide which features you need on your router.** If you rely on parental controls or port forwarding, check whether your carrier lets your router do the routing; on T-Mobile it can't.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I use my own router with T-Mobile Home Internet?

Yes. T-Mobile says third-party routers can connect to its gateway over Ethernet, and both will broadcast Wi-Fi unless you turn the gateway's network off in the T-Life app. Because T-Mobile gateways can't do bridge mode, your router sits behind the gateway's routing; using it as an access point avoids running two routers.

### Can I put a Verizon 5G Home gateway in bridge mode?

Verizon's support article for its Verizon Internet Gateway describes an IP Passthrough setting that hands the network-assigned address to the device plugged into LAN2 and turns off the gateway's Wi-Fi. The article doesn't list which models it covers, so check your gateway's admin page for the option.

### Do I need a Wi-Fi 7 router for 5G home internet?

Not for speed. T-Mobile's published typical download ranges top out at 498 Mbps, and most plans on Verizon's disclosure page list lower ranges; its high-band 1 Gig plan lists up to 1,000 Mbps. Buy Wi-Fi 7 for newer devices or a multi-gig future plan, not for the 5G connection itself.

### Will port forwarding work on 5G home internet?

On T-Mobile, no: T-Mobile says its gateways can't enable port forwarding. Verizon lists a port forwarding article for its 5G Home Router. Our port forwarding and CGNAT guides explain how to check whether your connection can accept inbound traffic.
